Dr. Benjamin B. Herr began his teaching career at West Hempfield in 1906. From there he progressed to Columbia and Bethlehem High Schools, and then to Lancaster to become science department head at Lancaster Boys’ High School and later principal of that school.
When McCaskey opened in February, 1938, Dr. Herr assumed the principalship. Under his direction a music department was developed in the school, and many athletic activities were initiated. In 1949 he was awarded by Franklin & Marshall College the honorary degree of Doctor of Pedagogy.
He retired as principal in 1953.
Each year the Benjamin B. Herr Scholarship awards $1,100 to the highest ranking Physics student who is going to attend a college or university, and demonstrated a desire to continue their education in this field. No essay is required.
